The Mother City began with a cultural idea: bring the food, flavour and familiarity of Cape Town home cooking to Dubai.
But nostalgia alone does not build a restaurant.
The challenge was to translate that authenticity into a hospitality concept that could work commercially — balancing menu, location, licensing, equipment, delivery, guest experience, operating costs and the realities of the Dubai F&B market.
The question became:
How do you protect what makes the concept feel like home while building a business capable of standing on its own?

We have developed The Mother City from both sides of the restaurant at the same time: what the customer should feel and what the business needs to work.
Our role has included:
- Concept Development: Defined the proposition around authentic Cape Town home cooking rather than a broad or diluted interpretation of South African cuisine.
- Menu Strategy: Reviewed the market and shaped a consolidated menu around dishes with cultural relevance, operational practicality and delivery potential.
- Commercial Modelling: Tested rent, licence costs, equipment, staffing and operating assumptions against the P&L before committing capital.
- Site Evaluation: Assessed potential operating locations, including an existing hospitality site in JLT, against both commercial and operational requirements.
- Asset Due Diligence: Investigated equipment condition, lease position, licence status and other factors affecting the true value of an existing restaurant opportunity.
- Brand Development: Built the concept around heritage, family and the idea of food passed from Grandma to Mom to Daughter.
- Launch Planning: Structured the work required across design, licensing, operations and marketing to move the concept toward market.

The Mother City has evolved from a restaurant idea into a defined hospitality concept with a clearer business model and brand identity.
Work completed to date has created:
- A defined positioning: centred on authentic Cape Town food and culture.
- A structured menu direction: designed around authenticity without ignoring operational reality.
- A clearer commercial model: for testing venues, rent, equipment and operating costs.
- A due-diligence framework: for evaluating potential restaurant acquisitions or existing operating spaces.
- A developing brand system: combining Cape Town heritage with a contemporary Dubai hospitality experience.
- A roadmap toward launch allowing major investment decisions to be made against real assumptions rather than enthusiasm alone.

From home cooking to hospitality business.
The Mother City is currently in development.
The focus now is on completing the concept, determining the right operating location and format, finalising the commercial model and preparing the brand for launch.
Every decision is being tested against two questions:
Does it still feel like Cape Town?
And does it make business sense?
The project moves forward only when the answer to both is yes.
